Does a convection microwave heat food by convection? What is induction heating?

A  classic example of how misleading advertising terminologies can be. Although I must admit that the term “convection microwave oven” is just confusing, not as hilarious as something like “laser power of washing detergents” :))

While discussing forms of heat transfer, we were trying to identify daily-use appliances that are based on different heating techniques. A microwave oven actually heats food using microwave radiation and the convection microwave does not use the “microwaves” at all when being used in the convection mode! So, a convection microwave is either a microwave oven or a convection oven depending on the mode chosen but never a convection microwave oven.

Immediately, another question popped up – “radiation heating doesn’t need a medium of heat transfer but a microwave has air inside it, so is it still radiation heating?” Well, yes, it is still radiation heating, which then results in some convection heating due to the presence of air inside.

Induction heating on the other hand is a form of resistive heating of the vessel itself that in turn heats the food in it through conductive heating.
