Why does a dry toothpick break but a wet toothpick bend?

A question arising out of pure observation while we were discussing Air and Atmosphere. The child was playing with a toothpick and water (quite surreptitiously as I later realised!) and made this wonderful observation. I am sure we all have observed it at some point but never given much thought to it because as adults, we are conditioned to accepting how things behave…

In fact, this behaviour of wet wood is also akin to how wet clothes behave as compared to dry clothes, and why we sprinkle water on them before ironing. The strands of the fabric become more flexible and can be shaped more easily. Should I call this a Chemistry or Physics question?…. The lines are blurred ?
