Why does a wooden boat with a hole sink even though wood floats on water?

This week, we have been exploring density and the obvious path to undertanding the concept starts from observing which materials float and which sink. An interesting question popped up – we know that boats capsize, even wooden boats capsize eventually if there is a hole in them. But if wood floats in water, why should this happen?

Its interesting how guided observation leads to more complex concepts naturally! As the kids embark on the journey to figure out the answer themselves and understand the conditions when the boat would sink and when not, they automatically begin to comprehend what the Archimedes principle states! Its not a law for them but something that is so obvious! Isn’t that how Archimedes came up with the law in the first place anyway!  A curious mind and  a scientific attitude are what have helped mankind reach where it is today…
